what is SPRAY FOAM INSULATION?

A composite material called spray foam insulation is created when two chemicals (usually isocyanate and polyol resin) come into contact. These chemicals are brought together at the tip of a spray gun from two different hoppers or tanks that are moved by liquid or gas pressure. When they come together, they react to one another and produce a foamy mixture. The foam then dries in place, forming a strong vapor and air barrier.

The "cells" that make up this foam's microscopic pockets generate air gaps and barriers that make it harder for sound and heat to penetrate through the foam. These pockets will also reach even the smallest crevices and nooks since the foam expands to fill the space in which it is sprayed. Because of these qualities, spray foam functions as an excellent insulator.

Types of spray foam insulation

Both open and closed cell foams can insulate a home and act as air barriers. You must comprehend the advantages, the application in question, as well as the objectives you have for installing insulation before you can choose the spray foam that best suits your requirements.

Open cell

Picture
Spray foam with open cells contains a large number of partially encapsulated cells. It makes the foam quality a softer substance and is less expensive and hard than closed cell foam. It is applied using a spray nozzle to an open wall cavity and quickly expands to fill the space since it is made up of many air bubbles contained inside a polyurethane matrix. Since open cell foam is less water resistant than closed cell foam, you cannot get it wet. Vapor is allowed to travel through the foam matrix rather than being blocked.
Advantages:
  • Effective in hot settings where cooling loads predominate.
  • Outstanding for soundproofing or lowering noise.
  • Adheres nicely to steel studs as well as to cement board, wood, and ceiling.
  • Without having to cut or fit it around, the cavity can be completely filled in a quick and simple operation.
  • With only 4 inches of thickness, open cell can provide an air sealing benefit by keeping the air out.
Best for:
  • Attics
  • enter crevices
  • A difficult place to insulate
  • conversions of attics
  • underneath floors
  • Wooden frame
  • sound abatement

closed cell

Because closed cell foam has a higher R-value than other types of insulation, it is referred to as having a "closed" cell. The ability of a substance to insulate and prevent heat flow is measured by its R-value. The effectiveness of the insulation increases with increasing R-value. Once fully formed and hardened, closed cell foam is essentially incompressible. Buildings and appliances can be insulated with this material. Due to their high resistance, closed-cell spray foams prevent mold growth, prevent water infiltration, and moisture buildup. They are also used to maintain consistent temperatures and can even enhance building structures.
Advantages:
  • Provides superior insulation to other forms of insulation for the space.
  • Spray foam with a closed cell structure can cut energy use by an average of 40–60%.
  • strong airtight seal is created.
  • mold growth is stopped by a moisture barrier.
  • Improve the structure of the building.
Best for:
  • Pole barns
  • Outbuildings
  • Garages and sheds
  • Metal Buildings
  • Storage Tanks and Containers
Our goal is to offer the best service for all kinds of structures. Both at work and at home, we want you to feel at ease.

"Last month, The Spray Foam Doctor insulated two of my houses, and they did both jobs quickly and expertly. They had to coordinate with the renter in order to work on the townhouse, but they managed to complete the task without causing any commotion or tension. They had a considerably more difficult work with my home because it had been added to and changed numerous times. They were able to wrap the kneeboards, fill every void with insulation, and seal every crack. The best part is that they vacuumed up all the stray fibers that leaked from the attic, leaving my stairway and upstairs cleaner than when they arrived. Gratitude to The Spray Foam Doctor!
